I first heard about Grace Notes Subscription on the Mom Struggling Well podcast. Emily Thomas, the host of the podcast, shared that scripture memory was a struggle of hers, but that her friend Deborah’s business was helping her with it. As someone who has always had a hard time truly hiding God’s word in my heart, I was intrigued.

Grace Notes Subscription is a monthly subscription service that selects one verse of scripture for each month, creates beautiful artwork for that verse, and sends subscribers prints of the verse to display in their home or office. The verse and design change each month and while Deborah does provide a sneak peek or two on social media, the finished product is a total surprise. This truly makes opening each envelope feel like receiving a gift from a friend in the mail.

Deborah is a wife and mom of four kiddos, so she knows all about having a busy life. Grace Notes is her way of practicing Lectio Devina (Latin for Divine Reading), the idea of reading a portion of scripture repetitively and seeing the word come alive in your life. In fact, the mission of Grace Notes is to provide a way to repetitively read, pray, and meditate with the same small portion of scripture for a month so that the word of God would become living in our lives.

Each month’s Grace Notes Subscription envelope includes two prints (5×7″ and 2.5×3.5″) and one waterproof vinyl sticker of that month’s design. You also get a coordinating paper clip that changes every month and a 5×7″ card to write your prayers for the month and the verse. All the pieces are designed as a set and I haven’t received a set yet that I didn’t love.

As someone who has a full (to sometimes overflowing) life, this idea of starting small and almost bumping into scripture as I went about my day sounded divine. It made scripture memory feel approachable – doable even! I quickly ordered the November envelope and was blown away by the scripture Deborah chose and the design.

I had been meaning to add a monthly gratitude log to my bullet journal but hadn’t made it a priority. Upon opening the Grace Notes envelope and seeing the month’s verse – In everything give thanks for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – I started the log and clipped the small verse to the page. I’ve continued this habit over the past few months and find that having the verse attached to the gratitude page 1) helps me connect what I am grateful for to God and 2) reminds me to pray the word as I record my gratitude for the day.

 

The larger print spent the month leaning on my mantle and the sticker lived on my phone case. I love that each month’s verse seems to be carefully selected with the time of year and rhythm of the season in mind. November’s verse focused on thankfulness, December’s verse encouraged joy, peace and hope and January’s verse reminds us God’s mercies are new each morning. In fact, January’s verse helped confirm that steadfast was my one little word for 2017. I can’t wait to see what Deborah has selected for February.

I find the larger print is just the right size to washi tape to the edge of my computer screen, lean on a mirror or even pop into a frame on my dresser. This year, I decided to create a collection in the back of my bullet journal for each month’s Grace Notes sticker. This will help me keep track of the scripture I memorize this year and is a nice way to see all the designs in one place.

I’ve also started writing the verse on the left side of my bullet journal facing the monthly title page. At the end of every month, I’ll affix the larger print to that page. Writing the verse at the beginning of the month is a great opportunity for me to pray over the month and ask God to direct my path in the coming weeks.

How to get a Grace Notes Subscription

You can order a single Grace Notes envelope for $10, or order a 2, 3, 4, 6 or 12-month subscription for $9 each month. If you subscribe, the orders ship on the first of the month and you can either pay all at once or be billed on the 20th of each month for the following month’s envelope.

Grace Notes subscriptions make a great gift. In fact, I gave my mother in law a subscription for Christmas this year and it was a big hit. Deborah can even stagger your subscription to be delivered every other month, making a 6-month subscription last all year if you like. This would also make a great graduation gift for a niece or birthday gift for a dear friend.
